Beal College Sponsors Hike for the Homeless

Fundraising event to support Bangor Area Homeless Shelter

The Hike for the Homeless will begin and end on the Bangor Waterfront. Click here to register online.

Beal College is a corporate sponsor for the Hike for the Homeless, taking place on April 6, 2019.

An initiative begun by the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter in order to help raise funds for its annual budget of almost $800,000, the Hike for the Homeless is in its 24th year.

Beal’s sponsorship allows the College to register up to 15 hikers for the event, which will begin and end at the Bangor Waterfront. Registration will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the hike starting at 11 – rain or shine. At noon, the event will wrap up with a BBQ and prizes.

The hike is open to participation by individuals, families, and organizations.

According to Robin Tardiff, Director of Career Services at Beal College, several students and staff members at Beal also work at the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter. Participating in the Hike for the Homeless allows them to give back, and it also strengthens their many ties to the community.

“Several Substance Abuse Counseling students are participating in a committee to help raise awareness,” Tardiff said. “We are also doing some informal fundraisers, and encouraging students to sign up. All are invited!”

State and federal funds account for just a third of the Shelter’s budget. Donations raised by events such as the Hike help to make up the difference, and help keep the Shelter open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, offering food, a safe place to stay, and connections to crucial services for the thousands of individuals in our area who visit each year.

The 2017 Hike for the Homeless saw 1,100 participants and raised over $37,000 for the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter.
