Nursing and Medical Assisting cohorts combine efforts for May events
Bangor Daily News | Jessica Murry comes from a family closely associated with law enforcement, her father and her brother both serving in the field. So when she learned of the tragic death of Maine State Police Detective Benjamin Campbell on April 3, she knew she needed to do something to help his family.
“I felt compelled to help in any way I could,” she said. She approached officials at Beal College, where she is currently enrolled in the Nursing program, with the idea for the fundraiser.
Campbell, 31, was struck and killed by a tire from a logging truck on Interstate 95 in Hampden while he was assisting a stranded vehicle. He is survived by his wife and their 6-month-old son.
Murry is spearheading a series of fundraisers for Campbell’s family together with the Medical Assisting and Nursing cohorts at Beal. The fundraisers are planned for the end of May.
The efforts will comprise several different events and programs. In addition to receiving donations at designated stations at the College, organizers will host a bake sale featuring a dessert auction. T-shirts will be for sale as well.
Murry is hoping not only to help the family of Detective Campbell, but also to raise awareness about the challenges faced by law enforcement officers and their families.
“People sometimes don’t understand all the sacrifices that law enforcement officers make,” she said. “They put their hearts and souls into it.”
